The Jakhoo Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman. This temple is a sacred place for the Hindu community of India. Situated on Jakhoo Hill, 2.5 km from the Ridge. It is at the height of 2,455 m above sea level. It is Shimla’s highest peak.

Jakhu temple history suggests that a deadly arrow injured Lord Rama’s brother Lakshmana. When he was fighting the battle with the evil king Ravana. A priest diagnosed Lakshmana and said that he needed a particular Sanjeevani Booti from the Himalayas to cure Lakshmana. Hanuman was sent to get that herb from the mountains. After reaching the range of mountains, Hanuman could not discover which herb was the Sanjeevani. Therefore he dug up the whole mountain and flew back to wherever Lakshmana was lying injured. It is believed that this temple holds the footprints of Lord Hanuman. The Lord Hanuman rested here while on his search for the Sanjivini Booti to save Laxman’s life.

The 108 feet tall idol of Lord Hanuman located at the top of the hill is a big attraction for tourists. Jakhoo temple gives shelter to countless playful monkeys. But, beware of the criminally minded monkeys that are waiting to rob tourists for food and shiny objects! it is advised that you carry a walking stick to keep them at bay.

Devotees from all over the country come here, especially at the time of Dussehra festival celebrations. The walk up to the hill takes approximately 30 minutes and follows a pleasant route.

If you want to see the sceneries while visiting Jakhoo Temple then opt for ropeway or 2.5 km walk or you can go for government taxi, the fare is approx 20Rs. The walk is not that much tiring if you are with friends it’s a nice trek to go to.
