Bijli Mahadev temple is located near Kullu. It is at an altitude of 7500 feet above sea level. Due to its serenity and scenic beauty, Bijli Mahadev Temple stands out from all the other temples. The higher ground surrounding the temple offers a scenic view of the Paravati and Kullu valley. The easiest way to reach Bijli Mahadev temple is by crossing the Beas River.
It is considered that the temple gets struck by lightning every year. The lightning deforms the position of the Shiva Linga. The priest of the temple attaches it again using butter and sattoo as an adhesive. This is the reason the temple is named after lightning. There is a 3 km moderately difficult trek uphill to reach this temple. It is easy for youngsters and trekkers.
Bijli Mahadev temple is full of miracles and mystery. There are small stone statues situated and one can perform pooja there too opposite the temple. There is a 20-meter tall pole of Deodar tree is installed which has got some interesting story. The pole will be replaced by another one made from the tallest Deodar tree found in the forest during special occasions. The people from surrounding places come and local villagers together to replace the pole and are a festival celebration for all of them. The tree is engraved in the square shape and fixed firmly in the place. Villagers feel that this is an opportunity for getting a blessing from Lord Shiva and consider this activity as serving God.
