Pangi Valley, Chamba , Himachal Pradesh

It is open for vehicles between months of June and October. It is covered with snow. The valley is populated with Bhoti people, who practice Buddhism or Hinduism.

Killar Chamba , Himachal Pradesh

Killar is the administrative headquarters of the Pangi Valley. It is at an altitude of 8500 feet above sea level. It is around 159 km from Chamba via Sach Pass and 130 km from Keylong. The roads here are tough no matter which route you take. You must start a journey very early. Expect to hustle through the day even if you are not driving yourself.

Killar is chiefly what Shimla must have been 100 years ago. It is a very small town with less population. Some government buildings are the most well-known structures here. All private buildings are normally conventional wooden homes. Shops and restaurants are mainly located on the main road that passes through the town. Restaurants here are very generic and don’t serve any local cuisine. Right now there are two hotels and one homestay in the town. They serve the entire valley because none of the villages have homestays unlike other parts of Himachal Pradesh. Very few people talk about Killar. Bikers commonly take up the trip because it is said to be the most dangerous road in the world. It has one of the best sunsets in the state. You can see waterfalls of various shapes and sizes. The most outstanding one is Mahaku Nala. It forms a splendid waterfall just on the outskirts of the town. This area will experience a tourism boom within a few years. Newer tunnels and roads are being planned. It will lead to a larger invasion in tourists. On the other hand, locals need better connectivity and infrastructure. So that travelers can’t just think only about their happiness. Let us see if they can strike a balance when the foreseeable happens.

Fairs & Festivals

The place is known for its festivals. The Sui Mata festival is held in March/April for four days. It is celebrated every year in the memory of Princess Sui. She gave her life to protect the people of Chamba. The ladies in Chamba look up to her and her images. They carry it from the old palace (Rangmahal) to her small shrine accompanied by dancing and singing. The Minjar festival is celebrated in July/August every year. This festival is celebrated on the harvesting of the annual maize crop. It culminates with a walk to River Ravi and throwing of the silk tassels or Minjars, worn by men and women into the river.
